How the Filter Works

Pool filters work to remove the finest debris and particulate from the water as the water is circulated through the system by your primary filter pump.

Filters come in three principal varieties: Sand, Diatomaceous Earth (DE), and Cartridge.

Sand filters use a uniform grain size of sand to strain algae and other debris from the water. DE filters operate on a similar principle as a sand filter, but can filter down to a much smaller size particulate due to the much smaller grain size of the filter media. Both of these filters need periodic backwashing or flushing out the filter media of solid debris collected over the course of its run time.

As a part of regular maintenance, a portion of water must be purged from the pool and this water will need to be replaced. In the case of earth filters, one must also purchase and recharge the elements within the filter tank with a premeasured quantity of DE to restore the full functioning of the filter.

Cartridge filters are our preferred option when considering a replacement pool filter. We prefer cartridge filters because they use a fine fabric cylinder of a washable filter media that needs periodic cleaning, but do not require additional consumables or result in excessive water loss. Cartridge filters lend themselves to greater efficiency across the life of the pool with respect to water conservation, chemical use, and heat/thermal efficiency. Since fresh cold water does not need to be added to a pool that has already been treated and warmed up in the mid-summer season, cartridges are usually the right choice.

We nonetheless offer a full line of swimming pool filters, from sand to cartridge to meet the needs of every pool owner. Much like our other offerings we focus on Hayward’s expert line of filters due to their strong standards in manufacturing, serviceability, and large market share in the region. This last detail is important for a pool owner because parts accessibility is crucial during the times of year when one simply wants to get their equipment restored to working order quickly if an incident does happen.

Hayward’s presence in the northeastern market helps Pool Doctor help you to make your own swimming pool season as efficient and free of complication as possible.
